FAQ

Birth is

Wild + Beautiful + Unpredictable + Incredible + Worth Capturing

How does birth photography work?

It takes a village to support a growing family, and it takes one to support a birth photographer too! Capturing labor and delivery is unlike any other form of photography, it includes being on call 24/7 from 38 weeks until your baby arrives.

On call for me means :

  • Not leaving the 2 hour radius of Grand Rapids or going anywhere my phone does not have service for up to 5 weeks while waiting on your babe.

  • Having a trust back up doula/photographer available to call in case I or my family gets sick, or another emergency occurs.

  • Always having my camera gear ready, doula bag stocked, and birthy clothes set out to be able to join you within 2 hours of getting your labor call.

  • Sometimes missing family birthdays, events, or concerts.

Being on call is no small feat, but every time I get that notification that baby is on their way the thrill of getting to support and document a new life makes it worth it every. single. time.

Who you invite into your birth space matters!

Birth is unpredictable! Since it’s not something we can plan around it’s important to me that I limit the number of clients I take per month to be able to hopefully eliminate any overlap between labors (and if two babies decide to come at the same time that’s when I call my trusty back up!) I am dedicated to supporting you and your birth experience, from the time you book until your 4th trimester. Your birth experience matters!

Will you be interacting with us at all during labor?

I am very good at reading the room. If you’re chatty, then I’ll gladly join in. If you’re focused and in laborland, my lips are sealed and I’m quietly capturing all of the details you’ll want.

What is doula support?

Becoming a doula was a very important step for me in learning everything I could about birth in order to better support and show up for my clients. I find that combining photography with on hands support and emotional support in your birth space flow together seamlessly. I do not offer doula support without photography because I find so much value in the capturing of the birth story for you family and in the ability to process your birth through powerful images afterwards too.

Do you have payment plans available?

I’m happy to create a payment plan for any birth package that suits the needs of your family. Most families pay my deposit of $500 and then a monthly payment until their due date.

Packages start at $1650 for birth photography and include high resolution digital files, on call time from 38 weeks until you have your baby, as well as my time at your birth.

What is birth photography? – Birth photography is telling the story of how your newest family member arrived! It’s your love story to your baby, and it’s also a love story to yourself, to show your strength, power, and magical ability to bring forth LIFE! I’m biased, but I think birth is remarkably beautiful and worth capturing every time.

How does it work?  – Free consultation to chat over any questions you might have, non refundable deposit is placed to save your birth month EDD space, in person meeting to go over all of the important details like when to call, what to expect, how I work, who my back ups are… etc. BONUS maternity session! Then at 38 weeks I go on call for you 24/7 until you go into labor when I’ll join you, document all of the birthy goodness and golden hour, deliver 10 sneak peek announcement images to you within 24 hours and then 3-4 weeks later I’ll give you your full hand edited birth story gallery with 120+ images.

What if you miss a birth, get sick or have an emergency? – I work with multiple awesome and professional doula/birth photographers as my back up. If I was sick or had an emergency, I’d call my backup to attend the birth.

What if the baby comes fast?

I’ll join you ASAP, especially if you have a history of fast labors. Keeping me posted on your labor signs no matter how small they may seem is key.

What happens if you miss a birth?

If baby comes so quickly that making it to the birth is not possible I will still come and document your story as soon as possible. A fast baby is part of your story! If the moment of birth is missed I will usually offer a Fresh 48 or newborn session to catch sweet baby cuddles instead.

Do you offer video? – Yes, I’m in the process of adding videography now, if you’re interested let me know and we can strike a deal!

Why should I book with you over using a friend or other person who has a good camera? – While I’m sure your friend is awesome, birth is just such a specific event that often has tight spaces, low lighting, unique smells and blood, and occasionally long hours that hiring a pro will make a big difference. This is a very niche thing to be able to handle, and as a professional birth photographer I’m ready for any birthy curveball or setting I could be thrown.

How will you take pictures in the dark? – As a professional photographer I am comfortable taking photos in all lighting conditions with or without flash. That being said, cameras need some light to function, so I also always bring a strand or two of twinkle lights that we can put up if I need a little more light than what is available.
